Dream Theater é uma banda de metal progressivo oriunda dos Estados Unidos e formada em meados dos anos 80. Tornaram-se numa das bandas do movimento progressivo mais bem sucedidas desde o auge do rock progressivo em meados dos anos 70.

A banda é conhecida pela qualidade técnica de cada um de seus integrantes, tendo ganhado vários prêmios por revistas especializadas. São muito respeitados por grandes nomes do rock e metal, tendo colaborado com vários outros músicos de renome. Em um exemplo famoso, John Petrucci foi nomeado como o terceiro guitarrista do G3, juntamente com Steve Vai e Joe Satriani, seguindo a trilha de guitarristas como Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp e Yngwie Malmsteen.

Dream Theater também é conhecido por sua versatilidade em estilos musicais, o que tornou possível à banda entrar em turnê com diversas bandas, que incluem Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, Marillion, Kansas, In Flames, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Queensrÿche, Fear Factory, Enchant e Symphony X.
